Parallel to the detentions and arrests of clergy, ruling party lawmakers in the National Assembly's Education Committee voted in favor of a legislative initiative against the Mother See Television and Radio Broadcasting Company Shoghakat.
The bill's authors, State Duma members Sisak Gabrielyan and Taguhi Ghazaryan, propose reducing the number of public broadcasters by one. Although the bill doesn't mention its name, they acknowledge that they are referring to the spiritual, cultural, and educational television and radio broadcasting organization Shoghakat.
"This is directed against the Armenian Apostolic Church as part of a targeted campaign," said opposition MP Lilit Galstyan. Government MP Taguhi Ghazaryan stated: "As for the church's attacks on the state, I will not comment on that."
According to current legislation, the Public Television and Radio Broadcasting Company, the news channel, and Shoghakat broadcast using state funds. Literary critic Kazaryan and former journalist Gabrielyan argue that in all three cases, funds are spent ineffectively, viewership is low, and so is quality. They place high hopes on a change in the law and efficient use of funds. "We believe that allocating funds without a competitive process for decades is ineffective. This has no positive impact on either content or quality," emphasizes Taguhi Kazaryan.
